on the 28th of November 1878 to appoint M. J. Hayes Ball to be Assistant Interpreter in the Supreme Court
and I took other steps referred

my despatch "General" of
29th April last.
I
now enclose
a
copy
of a letter from the Acting Chief Justice, Mr Snowden, from which
it will be seen that Mr Ball has done his work to the satisfaction. I therefore recommend
Mr Ball to Your Lordship for the

Snowden's views as to the value
of
Mr Ball's services and the salary that should be appropriated to the

office, I venture to ask for Your Lordship's authority to submit to the Legislative Council a proposal for paying him $2,400
a year rising
by annual increments
of
$480 to
$3,600.
on the 1st June 1881.
